Eloquency and rhetorics, theatrical skills? No. But to keep out the devil and his brides and the golden cow from the lurch.
He did not choose those, who were famous orators and teachers and actors or bribery specialists or pseudo-charity benefactors - He chose the repentant sinners and the humble and obedient ones to God, who were willing to give up their comfort zones and their accustomed lives for serving God and for teaching and living Jesus' simple truth: 'Love your neighbour as yourself.' So, don't do to your neighbour, what you would not like him to do to you yourself.

They lived and led by example and most were martyred for their belief that is based on Jesus' simple law, which includes the ten commandments. So, a priest needs to live and lead his flock by reminding them especially not to overindulge in drinking and other things, not to steal, not to lie, not to perform pagan rites and not to give into superstition and fortune telling and other magical practices, not to bribe or accept bribery, not to refuse childbearing in marriage and not to become guilty of other homicide in any way, like abortion, and other practices. But instead to nurture souls for their highest good, and to live in the mysteries of the blessed Sacraments. And living and leading by example in the essence of the ten commandments and in the sacraments is our all love's duty to God and thanksgiving to Jesus.
